Industry news and useful tools

Todayβs section is curated by Jimmy Choca, who is a Senior Software Engineer on the Postmark team.

|
Hereβs what Jimmy recommends that you check out, and why:
In his recent podcast episode with Cal Newport, Andrew Huberman discussed how
to actually stay focused, including the importance of deliberate effort, mental space, combating pseudo-productivity metrics, addressing phone addiction, and exploring structured remote work approaches.
Alex DeBrie's talk on data modeling with DynamoDB highlights its scalability and management benefits. Learning about NoSQL
databases like DynamoDB can significantly improve a developer's system design skills, especially regarding different access pattern considerations.
Robert C. Martin's
book, Clean Code, has been a foundational resource for me since the beginning of my career, emphasizing readability and coding as a craft. While some may have differing opinions on its concepts, engaging with them can prompt valuable introspection and prioritize coding practices.

Words of wisdom from a Postmark customer: Adrien Rey-Jarthon
|
|
|
|
In this monthβs customer interview we talked to Adrien Rey-Jarthon, founder of updown.io.
|
|
|
|
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and the work you do?
After five years of computer science school, and five years of self-teaching before that, I joined a great company working with Ruby on Rails (Dimelo), and in parallel started updown.io as a side-project. Eleven years later, I left to continue full-time solo on updown.io, which has been growing nicely.
How has Postmark helped you?
I discovered Postmark while comparing offers for Dimelo and ended up using it for updown.io too because it was so good. The best features for me were the reliability and the UI, which is great for debugging issues and understanding errors.
How are you using Postmark on your projects today?
Postmark powers all transactional email notifications sent by updown.io, which is about 300k/month.
What advice would you give other folks in your role about implementing and managing their email?
Avoid services which may have lower cost (on paper) but with much less debugging possibility, a less comprehensive UI, or limited support. You'll need those at some point and when you do, you'll regret the decision (and the time spent will offset the cost savings).
We love to publish our customersβ stories. Would you like to be featured next month? Fill in this quick and extremely yellow form, just like Adrien did, and weβll make it happen.

Should you use a dedicated IP, or is a shared IP better?
IP reputation is crucial for your companyβs email deliverability. So is it better to choose the path of a dedicated IP, or a shared IP? We dove deeply into the pros and cons of each in our guide, so you can make the right decision for you and
your business. (Spoiler: No, a dedicated IP is not a silver bullet to fix your deliverability issues.)
DKIM: What is it and why is it important when sending emails?
DKIM, or DomainKeys Identified Mail, is like the secret agent of email security, sniffing out any sneaky changes made to your messages in transit. With Google and Yahoo tightening their sender guidelines, mastering DKIM is your ticket to email authenticity. Dive into our guide for all things DKIM (plus, there's a video with adorable puppies 🐕 🐶)!

Behind the scenes at Postmark 👀

Since Yahoo and Gmail have teamed up to announce new rules for email authentication and spam prevention, we email nerds have started to lovingly refer to them as "Yahoogle" (Yahoo + Google). The Postmark team couldn't resist adding a bit of fun to the mix with our
Senior Customer Support Specialist, Jordan, creating a catchy "Yahoogle Yodel" jingle, featured in our latest support video on how to verify a domain!
