Hi friend,

Pssst, can you keep a secret? We’re looking to improve our batch API to make it easier to send bulk emails! We want to make sure we get this right, so we need your help.

You might already be using Postmark’s batch API today. Or maybe you’re not because it doesn’t do quite what you wanted it to. And if you had no idea Postmark even had a batch API for sending bulk email (we do!), that’s okay, too. We’d still love to hear from you.

Industry news and useful tools

Todays section is curated by Matt Reibach, Developer Relations Engineer, who calls himself “a .NET and Node.js developer who is passionate about helping other developers build awesome applications. Outside of work, you will probably find him spending time with his family, watching the Sixers, (poorly) playing the guitar, playing video games, or listening to podcasts.”

Here’s what Matt recommends that you check out, and why:

The Ultimate Guide to Writing Technical Blog Posts
This guide from Rizèl Scarlett, a developer advocate at GitHub, is full of tips for getting started with writing technical blog posts. It covers everything including choosing topics, overcoming writer’s block, gathering feedback, and even promoting your finished post.

They Must Have Changed Something…
In this article Laura Atkins from Word to the Wise provides advice for senders who are experiencing sudden delivery problems such as messages going to the bulk folder, even when they believe they are “following all the rules.”

The Surprising Power of Documentation
This article by Vadim Kravcenko provides an in depth look at the many ways that internal documentation can be a valuable business resource, by saving time and increasing productivity. The article also describes how you can move towards a documentation-first culture at your company or organization.

Words of wisdom from a Postmark customer: Ingo Schubert

Our guest this month is Ingo Schubert, Principal Consultant & Solutions Architect, who calls himself a “loving husband and father, decent cook, happens to be able to write software here and there.”

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and the work you do?

By day I’m an IT security consultant (in the IAM space), at night I mostly sleep but when I do find time I do take care of various side-projects. The biggest one is abstimmen.online, an online voting platform for non-profits.

How are you using Postmark on projects today?

Sending emails through easy-to-use APIs with a fast delivery time is critical to having a useful online voting system. Having the ability to ‘bubble-up’ the status of email delivery reduced support tickets ("Why are my emails not reaching the voters?") dramatically.
We use Postmark for some standard stuff like sign-up validation, password reset, and support tickets (we use Zammad as our support ticketing system). The bulk of emails we sent is for getting the individual vote codes to the voters.

If you could give folks one piece of advice about how to implement and manage their email, what would it be?

If possible, use tracking and webhooks to monitor email delivery. SMTP might be faster, but depending on your use case, using the API and webhooks is a game changer.

🙌 We love to publish our customers’ stories. Would you like to be featured next month? Fill in this quick and extremely yellow form, just like Ingo did, and we’ll make it happen!

Hackathon highlight: Using ChatGPT for sentiment analysis
The ActiveCampaign developer relations team (👋 which includes Matt, who you met above) developed a proof of concept for an app that uses Postmark Inbound Webhooks, Pipedream, Python NLTK, and ChatGPT to parse incoming messages and analyze the message content.

There's a lot we can learn from inbound messages to improve customer experience, and AI is here to help! 🤖

Experimentation weeks: How serving our support team leads to a better customer experience
Our support team always has a seat at the table when we set goals and priorities for Postmark because of their incredible insights, email expertise, and product knowledge. So when our focus for this year’s Experimentation Weeks turned to serving our support team, we put all our time and energy into addressing their ideas and issues.

Take Postmark’s SMTP Field Manual for a spin

We believe email delivery shouldn’t be a mysterious black box—that’s why we’ve been running the SMTP Field Manual since 2019. This is an open-source app for documenting SMTP bounce responses from around the world and make the entire bouncing process more transparent and easier to troubleshoot. It’s an old-but-gold resource and we thought you might like to take a look! Here is a quick overview to get you started.

Behind the scenes at Postmark

Eugene, Postmark’s Principal Product Designer, took a walk down memory lane recently and found these Postmark ads he made in 2011 (!!!) for a Hacker Monthly e-zine. Who remembers struggling with Postfix?

Until next time,

Happy sending 💛
